5 creative writing activities that inspire students to tell their stories

It’s March, and Reading Month is in full swing! At Education.com, we have created a Reading Month Story Challenge to inspire young people to tell their stories. Your students and kids can submit a creative writing piece for a chance to win a free year of Education.com Premium membership.

To motivate young writers, Education.com has 140+ creative writing activities in our Learning Library tailored for Pre-K through 8th grade. Below are our top 5 favorite creative writing activities that encourage kids to unleash their imaginations!

1. Descriptive writing picture prompts

Develop your students’ creativity with these gorgeous descriptive writing picture prompts! These creative writing worksheets are geared toward middle school learners and ask students to examine a picture and imagine that it’s the first scene in a story. They are then prompted to use sensory words, including nouns, adjectives, and adverbs, to make their story come to life.

Guiding questions lead them through the activity, but the image is what really sparks their creativity. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words — who knows what story they’ll tell?

2. Wacky writing prompts

Inspire reluctant writers to use their imaginations with this 31-page workbook, chock-full of silly images and writing prompts for 3rd-graders.

What would happen if Cinderella’s evil stepsisters stole her carriage and ended up in the Sahara desert? Who would win if zombies fought a group of vikings? Why are a princess and a robot walking hand-in-hand through the city? What would happen if Medusa went to the hair salon?

Students can come up with creative answers to these questions and more with this quirky writing workbook!

3. “What’s your story?” worksheets

Empower students to find their voice with these “What’s your Story?” creative writing worksheets! What happens when a group of friends makes an accidental discovery? What about if they picture their favorite character coming to life? Or maybe they’d like to write about their favorite person or a time when they overcame difficult circumstances to accomplish the impossible. Whatever their story may be, we have a prompt for that!

4. Summer writing prompts

Are your students already dreaming about summer? This set of 8 writing prompts, designed for 3rd-5th graders, asks students to reflect on what summer means to them and use their imaginations to write about the summer to come! These exciting writing prompts utilize children’s existing stories and memories to give them content to work with, while also inspiring them to be creative and think outside the box as they write new stories.

5. Worksheets for characters and imagery

Are your students ready to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) but need structure and guidance? Any good writer knows that brainstorming is one of the most important parts of the writing process. These graphic organizers help students plan out their stories’ characters, as well as how these characters will interact with the story’s central conflict. Additionally, before they start writing, students can set intentions for how they plan to use imagery in their stories.
