Repair Chemically Damaged Hair: Rejuvenate Hair

Many people have damaged their hair through chemical dyeing and perming. After years of damage, sometimes your hair is left in such bad shape that there seems to be no hope of recovery. But don’t lose heart. Just seek help from a professional hairstylist or stick to at-home treatments and your hair will become healthy and strong again.

Home Treatment

Use a good quality shampoo. This refers to salon-grade shampoos containing high-quality active ingredients. Take some time to look at the ingredient list and choose a shampoo based on the ingredients rather than just the brand.

  • Avoid sulfates such as ammonium lauryl sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate sodium lauryl sulfate, isopropyl alcohol, formaldehyde, and propylene glycol. These ingredients can dry out hair, break down healthy hair proteins, and make hair more susceptible to damage.
  • Look for shampoos that contain sodium cocoyl isethionate, sodium lauroyl isethionate, and disodium laureth sulfosuccinate. These compounds are much milder than the sulfates used in cheap shampoos and are derived from more natural ingredients like coconut oil.
  • You can also choose shampoos that contain glycerin and panthenol. Glycerin forms a protective barrier and strengthens hair. Panthenol helps hair retain more moisture and strengthens hair follicles.

Use deep penetrating restructuring shampoo. This type of shampoo will strengthen your hair by forming a barrier between your hair and heat sources such as hair dryers and hair straighteners. Apply to hair and rinse after 5 minutes.

  • Alternate Deep Penetrating Reshaping Shampoo with another high-quality shampoo. Don’t use two shampoos at the same time. Over-washing your hair can slowly cause your hair to become drier and more damaged.

Gently dry your hair with a towel. You need to allow your hair to fully absorb the products you use each step of the way. Dab your hair gently with a towel to help it get the full benefits of shampoo before applying conditioner.

Use a deeply hydrating conditioner. This type of conditioner will repair the water-lipid barrier and prevent hair from becoming dehydrated.

  • They are generally not leave-in conditioners. Apply to hair while it is still damp, massage into the scalp, then rinse.

Use Homemade Hair Care Formulas

Use plastic wrap for hot oil treatments. This type of treatment can help restore some shine and moisture to your hair, but too much oil can cause your hair to look greasy, so don’t overdo it. Usually, 1-3 times a month is enough.

  • Heat 120ml of essential oil until it is warm to the touch, but not hot. You can use olive oil or coconut oil. Apply the oil to your hair. If you do not heat it in advance, you can apply the oil to your hair, put on a shower cap, and blow it with a hair dryer.
  • Wrap your hair in plastic wrap or a shower cap and wait 30-45 minutes, depending on how damaged your hair is.
  • After the time is up, rinse all the oil from your hair with lukewarm water.

Make a hair mask with oil to moisturize your hair. Mix 1 tablespoon protein-fortifying shampoo, 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil, and 1 tablespoon moisturizing conditioner.

  • Apply the mixture to your scalp as you would a hair mask.
  • Wrap your hair in a plastic bag and then a towel.
  • Rinse your hair after 20 minutes.

Use honey and olive oil to repair damaged hair. Mix 2 tablespoons honey and 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil. Apply the mixture to damp hair, making sure the scalp and ends are covered.

  • Once your hair is fully covered with the mixture, wrap your hair in a towel.
  • Wait 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how damaged your hair is. Then rinse with warm water.
  • Wash off the residue with a mild shampoo.
  • You can adjust the amount according to the length of your hair. For example, if your hair is long, use 4 tablespoons of honey and 6 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil.

Make a hair mask with banana and honey. It repairs dry, damaged hair and is gentle enough to be used twice a week.

  • Mash 1 banana in a bowl, add 1 raw egg, 3 sugary milk, 3 tablespoons honey, and 5 tablespoons olive oil, and mix well.
  • Apply the mixture thoroughly to your hair and let it sit for 15-30 minutes.
  • Wash your hair with cold water and mild shampoo.

Prevent Hair from Being Chemically Damaged Again

Change hair care products. This will allow your hair to slowly recover from existing damage and avoid future damage. Try using products that nourish your hair, such as moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.

  • You can also use a protein or keratin-restructuring shampoo to strengthen your hair.

Avoid hair dyeing or other harsh chemical treatments. If you’re serious about protecting your hair from harmful chemicals, you should stop dyeing and perming your hair. While chemically treated hair may look good temporarily, it eventually causes damage. By stopping chemical treatments that are very damaging to your hair, you can avoid further damage to your hair.

  • If you must dye your hair, try to use a natural hair dye, such as henna or tea. They are less harmful to hair.

Get your hair trimmed regularly. Trimming your hair regularly can help prevent it from being damaged again in the future and reduce or repair damage that has already been done. Spend some time trimming your hair regularly, usually every 6-8 weeks, to maintain healthy hair.
